Wasatch Academy

Wasatch Academy is an independent boarding and day school in Mount Pleasant. Presbyterian minister Duncan McMillan opened it on April 19, 1875. It began as a mission school in a Mormon pioneer town and is secular today.

How the school started

McMillan’s charge, kept on the school’s Facts & Traditions page, was:

Let it endure like the Wasatch Mountains; call it Wasatch Academy.

McMillan arrived in Mount Pleasant on March 2, 1875, and opened classes on April 19 with 44 students. Enrollment reached 109 by the end of the first term. Those dates are in Intermountain Histories.

Liberal Hall

Liberal Hall is the 1875 founding hall and now the school’s museum. It stands on Main Street. McMillan came to Mt. Pleasant in 1875 “by train, stagecoach, mail-wagon through the valley and over the mountain” to “the most lovely valley I ever beheld.” The newly erected Liberal Dance Hall, now known as Liberal Hall, became the first school and church. The Women’s Missionary Society of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, sent the draft that finished the payment on the building. In 1891 the school moved from Liberal Hall onto the present-day campus. The restored hall stands at 67 West Main Street. Wasatch acquired it in the 1990s, and Certified Local grants funded the rehabilitation, as reported in a May 17, 2017 Daily Herald article.

The campus and the pioneer town

Mount Pleasant was settled in 1852. Wasatch Academy grew up inside that Mormon pioneer town: a Presbyterian school on a Latter-day Saint settlement’s Main Street, later a historic campus in the Heritage Area’s Little Denmark district. The 35-acre campus is listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. The school that began in Liberal Hall educated local children and, in later mission-school years, boarding students from a wider region. The Mormon Pioneer National Heritage Area is a Congressionally designated heritage area and is independent of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

What the Heritage Area funded

The Heritage Area’s work with Wasatch Academy is listed on Wasatch Academy Historic Buildings. The music conservatory was restored in 2014. Pierce Hall and the historic administration building were restored in 2016. Craighead has three funded phases: the Craighead vocational building restoration in 2019, the Craighead Hall restoration in 2022, and the Craighead Building Electrical Modernization in 2024. The 2022 Craighead Hall restoration used $37,500 in federal funds and $442,985 in private cash match. The 2024 electrical modernization of the 1938 Craighead building used $20,000 in federal funds and $22,980.29 in local cash match.
