4-day self-drive

Heritage Self-Driving Tour #2

A north-to-south (or east-to-west) heritage route through museums, historic districts, national parks, and the Lake Powell corridor.

Schedule four days so you can linger in pioneer towns as well as the parks. Begin near Payson or Nephi and work south through the Mormon Pioneer National Heritage Area, or reverse the order if you are arriving from the east.

Day 1

Northern start: byways, museums & historic towns

Payson or Nephi options into Sanpete and Sevier valley heritage stops.

Payson option: begin on the Mt. Nebo Scenic Byway, then connect to SR 132. Nephi option: start in Nephi and follow SR 132 south into the heritage corridor.

Museum stops along the way often include Fountain Green, Redmond, Gunnison, and Richfield. Historic districts reward a slower pace in Mt. Pleasant (including Wasatch Academy), Spring City, Manti, and Sterling, where pioneer architecture still shapes Main Street.

Day 2

Richfield south: museums, byways & state parks

Sevier Country museums, Beaver Canyon scenery, and Fremont Indian State Park.

From Richfield, continue through Annabella, Monroe, Joseph, Sevier, Junction, and Panguitch museum communities. Pioneer architecture and small-town main streets are part of the story, not just roadside stops.

Detour for Fremont Indian State Park, Piute State Park, or Otter Creek State Park when you want outdoor time between towns. The Beaver Canyon scenic byway and Panguitch historic district make strong late-day anchors.

Day 3

Bryce, Cedar Breaks & Zion

Three park icons, or a slower day in their pioneer gateway towns.

Choose a parks day among Bryce Canyon National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, and Zion National Park. Connecting all three in one day is ambitious; many travelers pick two and save the third for another trip.

Prefer heritage stories to mile-counting? Linger in gateway towns where pioneer houses, fields, and local museums still reflect early Mormon settlement around the park edges.

Day 4

Glen Canyon, Lake Powell & southern museums

Water recreation, Kanab's Little Hollywood, and Grand Staircase country.

Finish at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Lake Powell, then work the southern museum and town circuit: Hatch, Springdale, Glendale, Mt. Carmel, Kanab, and Big Water at the edge of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Kanab's historic district and film-country landmarks reward a walk. The Mt. Carmel scenic byway ties Zion's east side to this southern corridor. Leave time for artisan studios; heritage here is as visible in craft as in sandstone.
