Sevier County lies in central Utah along Highway 89 and Interstate 70, with Richfield as its largest city. This Heritage Area calls it the Sevier Valley district. From Richfield those same roads reach the older towns and the climb to Fish Lake.
Towns in Sevier Valley
These towns are on the Sevier Valley page. Richfield is the region’s principal hub for lodging, dining, and visitor services. The others are short drives on 70 or 89.
- Redmond: Red bentonite clay mounds west of town, and a salt mine that has run for about a hundred years.
- Salina: Settled in 1864, abandoned after the Black Hawk War, then rebuilt. Victorian Inn, Mom’s Café, and Burns Saddlery, which has served the area for more than 150 years. Discovery Road stops at the saddlery in Horse Power.
- Aurora: Aurora sits on the bend of the Sevier River. The town is known for hand-sculpted stone furniture and antique shops.
- Sigurd: A small agricultural community along the Sevier River corridor.
- Richfield: The largest city in the district and its principal center for lodging, dining, museums, shopping, and visitor services.
- Glenwood: A historic grist mill and a cooperative store.
- Elsinore: Once called Little Denmark. Danish converts settled it in 1874 and named it for Kronborg Castle, the setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The Utah-Idaho Sugar Company processed beets here from 1911 to 1929.
- Monroe: Named for President James Monroe. A Mormon company built a fort here first.
- Joseph: Once called Jericho. Home of the Old Farm Museum.
Parks and the forest
Fish Lake is the alpine stop above the valley. It is a trout fishery (brown, lake, rainbow, and splake) with a historic lodge. Fishlake National Forest covers nearly one million acres and has more than a thousand miles of trails. The Paiute ATV Trail runs through this country. Fremont Indian State Park, in southern Sevier County, holds Fremont rock art and a visitor-center museum.
Local stories
