The Under The Rim heritage area is named for its location beneath the redrock rims of the Colorado plateau.  Hollywood fell in love with the area and filmed Westerns like "Gunsmoke" here for decades.  The Kanab area has also become one of Utah's burgeoning arts communities where shops and galleries display fine art and photography, as well as Western memorabilia and some of the highest quality Native American crafts and jewelry in the region.

The name "Kanab" is derived from an Indian word for a basket carried on a mother's back for transporting her baby.  The town was first settled in 1858, but was resettled several times due to Indian troubles. This Victorian house is the former home of two early pioneers in Kanab. Built in 1894, the Heritage House is on the National Register and has been fully restored. From Kanab follow 89A to Fredonia.  Turn left onto AZ 389, drive 15 miles west.  American Indians first farmed and hunted near the springs.  By the early 1870's the Mormon Church had built a fort at the site and established a large cattle ranching operation.  Today a visitor center, guided tours of the fort, "living history" demonstrations, an orchard, garden, and half-mile loop trail offer a glimpse of American Indian and pioneer life in the Old West.
